THE EFFECTS OF MARINE GROWTH ON OFFSHORE STRUCTURES

 

1)    The increasing thickness of the marine growth increases the member’s effective diameters, leading to increased projected area and displaced volume, and hence increased dynamic loading;

2)    With the attachment of marine growth, a member’s surface is roughened. The increase in surface roughness gives rise to changes in both the drag and inertia coefficients, which strongly affects the hydrodynamic response of the structure. Large differences were found in the maximum hydrodynamic loads for different marine growth thicknesses values because not only the jacket mass was affected but also the added mass was increased.

The MGP-i marine attachment suppression ring developed by IEV Group in Malaysia in 1987 is made of special environmentally friendly rubber. The special design structure of the product has a self-cleaning function. It does not need to use any power source, its power is provided by the endless ocean energy, through the use of ocean waves, swells, currents and tidal fluctuations for the specially designed MGP-i marine attachment suppression ring Continuous rolling motion inhibits the growth of marine attachments and provides a steady stream of power.

MGP-i is the latest generation of design, with self-cleaning function and typhoon-proof and impact-resistant design. It can be installed in single-ring or multi-ring according to the needs of the basic structure.
With tidal and wave surges, the MGP-i has the ability to remove existing attached marine growth from above the water surface, permanently preventing their repopulation in the wave zone and reducing the wave load caused by it.
